In disappointing-but-perhaps-not-unexpected news, Wes Anderson’s highly anticipated movie The French Dispatch has been postponed indefinitely due to the pandemic.
The film — which stars Timothée Chalamet, Bill Murray, Saoirse Ronan, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Elisabeth Moss and more and centers around a fictional French New Yorker-style publication — was initially pushed back from its original July 24 release date to Oct. 16. But now Searchlight has pulled it from its schedule entirely, listing it as “unset” on its release calendar.
The French Dispatch isn’t the only big release to be postponed while studios wait for theaters to safely reopen; Disney has postponed its live-action version of Mulan indefinitely and pushed back all of its forthcoming Avatar and Star Wars movies by one year.
“Over the last few months, it’s become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis, and today that means pausing our release plans for Mulan as we assess how we can most effectively bring this film to audiences around the world,” a Disney spokesperson said.
In the meantime, revisit the trailer for The French Dispatch below and try to take solace in the fact that it’ll come out eventually.
