Good news if you’re a beach lover with $129,000 in your bank account: you can now apply for a visa that will let you stay in Bali for up to 10 years. Indonesia’s acting director general of immigration, Widodo Ekatjahjana, announced the “second-home” visa this week, which will allow foreign nationals or former citizens to stay in the dreamy destination for five to 10 years, if they can prove that their savings includes a comma. Interested parties will also need to show a passport that’s valid for 36 months and include a resume in their application.
“This immigration policy is one of the non-fiscal incentives that can be a stimulus for certain foreigners to stay and contribute positively to the Indonesian economy amidst increasingly dynamic global economic conditions,” Ekatjahjana said during the announcement.
Basically, Indonesia wants flush foreigners to carry out investments while living in the country, which will likely attract people like wealthy retirees, successful global business owners and even digital nomads with padding in their bank accounts. The announcement comes after Bali reopened its doors to tourism in February 2022 after being closed during the pandemic and its recent introduction of the “social-cultural visa,” which allows foreigners to live and work in the country for six months.
If you’re one of the lucky few to have $129,000 in the bank and be able to pick up and move to Bali on a whim, good for you. Unfortunately the rest of us will have to settle for a mere visit to one of Bali’s beautiful beaches when we have the funds and vacation days to spare.
