Australian surfer Felicity Palmateer has finally released an avant-garde art project that meshes her two passions: art and surfing.

Skin Deep, which is about four minutes long and was four years in the making, showcases Palmateer surfing at locations including Fiji, Hawaii, Australia and Wales in the nude.

In the film, Palmateer is said to be exploring her own definition of what it means to be herself and her interpretation of what it means to be free.

“By stripping down and riding waves in remote and idyllic locations, she undertakes a journey towards uninhibited self-expression,” according to a release. “Palmateer is a lady, alone and at home in the sea, doing something she loves.”

Ranked 109th in the world amongst women by the World Surf League, the 28-year-old understands that some people will take Skin Deep less seriously because of the way it puts the naked female form on display. But to her, it is just art.

“To me, it’s an art piece,” Palmateer told The Inertia. “People are going to have opinions. That doesn’t mean that it’s right or wrong. I’ve said it before, but if it’s creating conversation and challenging people, then that’s the goal of art, right? There’s always going to be someone or a set of people who don’t like it, and that’s fine. I’ve said this a lot too, but if you make your coffee wrong these days, someone’s got something bad to say about it. But if it’s thought-provoking or challenging people, I’m happy with that.”
