Apple’s Weather App Reportedly Won’t Ever Say It’s 69 Degrees

Not very "nice," if you ask us

You'll apparently never see the number 69 on this weather app.

Bad news for Elon Musk and anyone else who loves to make a good 69 joke: Apple’s apparently been holding out on us. As The Verge reports, the built-in weather app on some versions of iOS — including iOS 14.6, the current version — refuses to ever display the temperature as 69 degrees, instead rounding down or up to 68 or 70 even when the current temperature is, in fact, 69 degrees.

It’s unclear if this is some sort of weird bug or an intentional move to avoid people taking screenshots and turning the weather into a meme. As The Verge notes, the glitch appears to only be in the weather app itself. “Clicking through to Apple’s source data from Weather.com will show the proper temperature, as do Apple’s home screen widgets,” the publication notes. “But the iOS weather app will refuse to show 69 degrees anywhere in the forecast, whether it’s for the current temperature, the hourly forecast for the day, or the extended forecast.”

Though there’s no official explanation yet, some Twitter users have a theory: Apple may be sourcing its data for the weather app in Celsius and then converting it to Fahrenheit. 20 degrees Celsius converts to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, but 21 degrees Celsius converts to 69.8 degrees Fahrenheit, which rounds up to 70. The Verge notes that 69 isn’t the only temperature absent in the weather app; apparently it has a similar issue with 65 degrees (where 18 degrees Celsius converts to 64.4 degrees Fahrenheit, while 19 degrees Celsius is 66.2 degrees Fahrenheit) due to rounding.

Apple has yet to comment on the issue, so for now, you’ll have to keep your jokes about it being “nice” outside to yourself.
