Socialites Emma Afra and Viviane Brahms died Tuesday after their Mercedes Benz rolled off the Fisher Island ferry and sank to the bottom of a 50-foot channel, Vanity Fair reported.

The women were traveling from the exclusive Fisher Island, which boasts the country’s richest zip code, to the mainland when the car fell off the ferry in a freak accident during the typically seven-minute ride.

“Shortly before 5:00 p.m. today, a vehicle on the Fisher Island ferry ended up in the water for reasons still unknown at this point in time,” Roberto Sosa, president and CEO of Fisher Island Community Association, said in a statement confirming the deaths Tuesday. “Fisher Island Community Association is actively assisting the various agencies involved in the ongoing recovery efforts. Our thoughts are with all those affected. We cannot confirm any additional details at this point in time.”

The car, containing the bodies of Afra and Brahms, was recovered Tuesday evening. The ferry had reportedly been inspected and cleared as recently as 2018. The Coast Guard said it would conduct a maritime incident investigation, while the Miami-Dade Police Department said it would conduct the death investigation.
