“I got eight days to my retirement, and I will not make a stupid mistake!”
Roger Murtaugh couldn’t be more wrong; Lethal Weapon is making a comeback. At a recent roundtable of movie producers conducted by The Hollywood Reporter, Dan Lin (The Two Popes) discussed a possible fifth installment of the Mel Gibson-Danny Glover buddy-cop franchise, which has laid dormant (outside of a forgettable TV series) since 1998’s Lethal Weapon 4.
“We’re trying to make the last Lethal Weapon movie,” said Lin. “The original cast is coming back. And it’s just amazing. The story itself is very personal to him. Mel and Danny are ready to go, so it’s about the script.”
As Popculture.com notes, the actual surprise here might be Richard Donner’s return; the director of the four previous films in the series turns 90 in April. While Mel Gibson’s stature in Hollywood took a hit in recent years over some of the actor’s racist and homophobic comments, he’s returned to a somewhat prominent level … albeit more for his directing work (see 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge) than his acting (Daddy’s Home 2).
