After being plagued by technical glitches and rising costs, HQ Trivia — the mobile game-show app in which players could answer trivia questions on their phones daily to win cash — was shut down abruptly in February. But the game made its triumphant return on Sunday (March 29) thanks to funding from an anonymous investor.
Fans were notified via a push notification that the game would be returning at its normal 9 p.m. EST timeslot, and more than 100,000 people logged in to try to win their share of the $1,000 prize pool. “I just hope I can make people smile cause things have been pretty sucky lately,” host Matt Richards said in a message to the Wall Street Journal before the start of the game.
Richards tweeted out an announcement about the return on Sunday night and also noted that if players have been waiting to cash out their previous winnings from before the app shut down in February, they will be able to “this week.”

The Verge confirmed that the comeback wasn’t a one-off event, either. “Episodes will begin to air more regularly in the future, but the schedule is currently up in the air as things are figured out,” the publication wrote. “The company has been acquired by a private investor who has asked not to be named.”
