Travel up the California coast until you reach Carmel-by-the-Sea and you’ll find yourself in the presence of architectural history. Specifically, it’s a residence known by a few names, including Cabin on the Rocks and the Walker house. The architect for this waterfront home was Frank Lloyd Wright, and it holds the distinction of being the one house he designed that’s situated on oceanfront property.

And someone just bought it for $22 million.

The Guardian‘s Dani Anguiano has more details on the house’s history. The house was commissioned by artist Della Walker, the widow of Clinton Walker. As The Guardian‘s article explains, Walker wrote to Frank Lloyd Wright with a specific request: “I wish protection from the wind and privacy from the road and a house as enduring as the rocks but as transparent and charming as the waves and delicate as the seashore.” It certainly seems like she got what she was looking for.

As per The Guardian‘s reporting, the house has remained in the hands of members of the family until now, with the $22 million price paid by a real estate investment firm, Esperanza Carmel LLC. The Walkers had purchased the land on which the house was build decades earlier, in 1918.

Fans of architecture on film, take note: the home in question can be seen in the 1959 film A Summer Place. It’s not the same thing as owning a Frank Lloyd Wright home of your own, to be sure — but it also costs a bit less.
