Why The Rock 2020 Isn’t As Crazy As It Sounds

Dwayne Johnson represents a credible independent bid for president.

Now that we can put aside Oprah 2020 rumors, the focus has switched over to Dwayne Johnson, formally known as The Rock, who told Ellen DeGeneres last month that he is “seriously considering” a White House bid. This might seem like a bit of a joke, but it is not entirely surprising. Johnson, a wrestler turned box-office stud who has almost 100 million Instagram followers and a transcendent charm, could definitely stir the electoral waters, writes Vanity Fair. He has reportedly been registered as a Republican in the past but often talks like a liberal. Vanity Fair writes that the most important factor supporting an independent bid for president is the historic unpopularity of both major parties. Only 37 percent of the public hold positive views of Democrats, while only 30 percent hold positive views of Republicans. It would be different if either party had a candidate that was well-liked. But on the day he was elected, President Donald Trump was the most unpopular candidate in modern American history, and his approval ratings continue to drift downward. Meanwhile, the Democrats have structural and cultural issues that might stop them from taking the advantage. Would Johnson be a good politician? That part is unclear. But he has attended both the RNC and the DNC and has winningly enthusiastic positions on the military and diversity.
