The nuclear-powered USS Gerald R. Ford weighs 100,000 tons and covers 4.5 acres (yes, ACRES). It cost $12.9 billion. And it has a jet catapult system that launches … trucks. Big ones.


Why the Navy felt launching trucks off the 1,100-foot-long carrier — which can hit 30 knots and cruise for 20 years without refueling — was the best way to test its catapult system isn’t important.
