A slew on new emojis arriving on your phone in the near future will include a wheelchair, guide dog, hearing aids and other inclusive, diverse characters.
The emojis — 230 in all — were announced Tuesday by the Unicode Consortium, which handles the standards of emoji, ABC News reported. This year’s list expands the people represented by emojis to include people with disabilities, people of different ethnicities and even a woman’s menstrual cycle.
There are 59 brand new emojis — like the mechanical arm and an ice cube — and 171 new variants for gender and skin tone, according to the Unicode Consortium. The people holding hands emojis now have four combinations of gender and all the various combinations of skin tones.
The ever-expanding list of animals and foods represented will now include an otter, sloth, flamingo, waffle, onion, garlic, falafel and more, respectively.
Unicode said to expect the new emojis in September and October, when they “typically” show up in software updates.
