A massive crack suddenly appeared in south-western Kenya last month after a period of heavy rains. The tear, which caused part of the Nairobi-Narok highway to collapse and is continuing to grow, sits in the middle of the Great Rift Valley where two tectonic plates are slowly moving apart, National Geographic reports. The valley splits the African plate into two unequal parts. Seismic activity along the eastern branch of the rift valley became evident with the formation of this new large crack in Kenya. Eventually, over tens of millions of years, the African continent will split and become smaller, leaving a large island in the Indian Ocean made up of the remnants of the modern African nations of Ethiopia and Somalia.
