Game of Thrones and Star Wars fans are in for a big surprise: GOT creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going to write and produce a new series of Star Wars films, according to an announcement from Disney on Tuesday. The new series will be separate from the main episodic Skywalker saga that started with Star War: A New Hope and is slated to wrap up with Star Wars: Episode IX in 2019. It will also not be related to the Rian Johnson-helmed series that was announced last year.
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, in a statement, according to Variety. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
Game of Thrones will end its run on HBO in 2019. The sprawling fantasy epic has taken the world by storm and has been hailed by fans and critics for its ability to miss spectacle and political wrangling. Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 for more than $4 billion. The studio has been exploring new ways to extend the Star Wars galaxy beyond the Skywalker family. There is no timeline for when the Benioff and Weiss-penned films would hit theaters.
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
