Fox News has defied the downward trends in the television business, notching its highest-rated year in 2017, thanks to a relentless news cycle and a dedicated fan in the Oval Office. But viewers are still moving away from traditional cable and satellite packages, and so Fox News has a plan to jump into an uncertain digital future that their rivals, like CNN, have so far avoided. On Tuesday, Fox News is announcing Fox Nation, a stand-alone subscription service available without a cable package. It would focus on right-leaning commentary, with original shows and cameos by popular personalities from Fox, like Sean Hannity. There would be no overlap with Fox New’s 24-hour cable broadcast. Instead, Fox plans to develop hours of new daily programming with a mostly fresh slate of anchors and commentators. Fox is following networks like ESPN and CBS, both of whom has created subscription streaming services.
