Unless you’re a contractor, farmer or otherwise employed in a business that requires you to routinely move large piles of stuff, you probably have no good reason to own a big-ass truck.
“But they’re fuuuun,” you say. Yes, they are. Which is why, despite a lack of necessity, you should get that big-ass truck. And then you should get it good and dirty like the engineers intended.
And if you’re looking for a truck that is — above all — an unimpeachably fun and enjoyable thing to operate, the 2018 Chevy Colorado ZR2 is your huckleberry.
We put ‘er to the test up at Monticello Motor Club’s off-road track on a terrible stormy and rainy day. Which means righteous conditions for mud-busting.
As for what we learned? This rig’s not your old-school, Defender-type off-roader. You get all the benefits of all-terrain mayhem, sure, but you’re also buckling into a spacious, quiet cab complete with Apple CarPlay via 4G LTE wifi, four USB ports and a 12V charger port.
And you won’t be in for a chiropractic appointment, either. It’s smooth sailing. This in part due to the lifted suspension (two inches higher) with a segment-first off-road application of Multimatic Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve (DSSVTM) damper tech and very functional rock sliders.
Translation: handles well on rocks.
Additionally, there’s a cool little feature called Surround Vision that employs four strategically placed cameras to offer a bird’s-eye view of the Colorado when you’re off-roading at low speeds. Handy highlight to have in-tow when traversing unknown (or uncharted) territory, for certain.
For heavy-hitting off-roaders, the Colorado might not dish out the visceral experience a fella is hunting. But at $40,360, it really can’t be beat for the recreational adventurer or novice 4×4 enthusiast.
