This Luxury Train Ride Through Peru Will Ruin All Other Train Rides for You

Do you know any other trains with a piano bar car?

Luxury train travel is having a moment.

There’s the new super-premium service in Japan, booked out through 2029 (slight exaggeration, but still). You may remember high-end travel brand Belmond from their spa-on-wheels in Scotland. Now? Belmond is back with another luxury service — their second in Peru, and the first overnighter.

Christened the Belmond Andean Explorer, this thing looks sweet. First, this is, of course, no normal train: it includes a restaurant, library, piano bar car, and an outdoor terrace equally suited to drinking and dancing — plus just 24 sleeping cars, for a total of 48 passengers. Unsurprisingly, the menu emphasizes the local, seasonal and traditional.

The high-altitude itinerary, which snakes through the Peruvian Andes, is even more impressive, with stops at Lake Titicaca, the Incan capital of Cuzco, Colca Canyon and Arequipa (depending on the itinerary selected). Interested parties can pick between one- and two-night trips, or opt to add on Belmond’s service to Machu Picchu, the Hiram Bingham
