Wolverine’s Newest Collection Was Inspired by a Coffee Shop

How do you take your handcrafted leather boots?

Most folks don’t realize it, but the same things — attention to detail, quality materials, artisanal construction — that go into brewing a good cup of joe also go into crafting a good pair of boots.

The bootmakers at Michigan-based Wolverine aren’t most folks, so they opted to base their new line on the Grand Rapids coffee shop that shares both their love of craftsmanship and their zip code. Featuring distinctive styles inspired by five beverages (café mocha, café miel, cappuccino, cortado and espresso) you can find at Madcap Coffee Company, the Wolverine 1000 Mile Café Collection is crafted by hand in the USA from premium Horween leather.

With construction techniques that trace their roots back to the pattern Wolverine used on its 1,000 Mile Shoe in 1914, the boots wear tough and durable but feel soft and pliable on your dogs.

To sweeten the proverbial coffeepot, Wolverine has given each of the boots a matching tongue and heel color combo that contrasts with the body, as well as outfitted them with either a leather or rubber outsole for extra traction.

“In looking at the names and tones of some of our favorite Horween leathers – like chocolate Cambridge and burnt ivory natural – they seemed almost as if they were meant to be made into something coffee related,” Wolverine tells us. “In Grand Rapids, Madcap is the reference coffee company in terms of quality and craft, and as we were discussing this concept their name came up immediately.”

Priced from $360-$400, the limited edition Café Collection drops Thursday (3/23) at high noon.
