Carhartt needs no introduction. It’s the brand your grandfather wore decades ago and the same one we don today, from the worksite to the local watering hole. But, thankfully, the heritage brand is not resting on its laurels. Their latest Super Dux collection is a case in point.
First created back in 1930, Super Dux was originally engineered as Carhartt’s technical clothing line for hunters. It grew in popularity over the course of four decades, peaking in the ’70s before it went into retirement. But the good Michigan folks knew the Super Dux line would make a return when the timing was right, which is why they’ve waited patiently to bring it back. And bring it back they have.
The modern Super Dux line includes Carhartt staples such as vests, hoodies, jackets and bibs, though I’m partial to the Sherpa-Lined Active Jacket now that cold weather has finally made its way to New York City. Unlike traditional workwear that’s stiff and boxy, the jacket’s relaxed fit pairs with more flexible fabrics to improve mobility without sacrificing durability.
Beyond the obvious fit and finish, Carhartt thinks of details you can only appreciate when Mother Nature shows her hand. Wind Fighter technology, for instance, prevents chilly drafts from slicing through the jacket’s layers while a DWR treatment sheds light rain and unforseen snow. Seams are even double-stitched to boost durability and rib-knit cuffs keep the wind out of your sleeves.
On a recent evening in the city, before turning in for the night, I broke out the Active Jac to see what it could do. Despite wearing only a long sleeve underneath, the blend of sherpa fleece and nylon supplied more than enough warmth as temperatures dropped into the 40s. Winds along the riverfront gave rise to a light spray that was no match for the DWR finish, and the fabric proved flexible as I hurried home to my apartment. While I’m partial to Carhartt’s more traditional offerings (I religiously wear the Insulated Duck Bib Overalls through winter), this Super Dux jacket is a great addition to any cold-weather wardrobe.
And if a heavy-duty jacket isn’t for you, fear not. While we’ve come to associate Carhartt gear and apparel with utilitarian prowess, the Super Dux line adds protection and comfort whether you’re commuting to the office or bombing down the hill on a sled this winter.
