S.F.’s 5 Most Over-the-Top Menu Items

Including a $180 steak sandwich

We live in an expensive place.

Doesn’t have to be: You can still get a drink at our favorite spot in town for a few bucks. We’ll be drinking as much of you as possible, 500 Club, while you’re still around

On the other hand, If you want to go all out on your local dining experiences, you can do that, too.

Like the $180 steak sandwich. Soon available at the One Henry Adams — just one feature of one of several projects coming to the development courtesy of Wagyumafia co-founder Hisato Hamada, along with a wagyu- and kobe-centric  butcher shop.

What to expect? “Wagyu beef breaded and fried, and served between slices of toasted white bread, with soy and vinegar sauce.”

Of course, that’s not the only super-luxe take on a menu staple in town. We also have:

The $52 Scotch cocktail: the Royal Salute Rob Roy at China Live’s Cold Drinks, made with Chivas Royal Salute 21-year and Glenlivet 12-year, with Lustau and Chinato vermouths and bitters. (Also note the Long Islay Iced Tea, which was born for Instagram.)

The $23 Papalote’s burrito, the Triple Threat. You won’t find it on the menu, but those in the know can expect “a massive delight of carne asada, chicken and shrimp, rice, beans and that special (and top-secret) Papalote salsa.” (This review is extremely good in its even-handed mix of anticipation and indignation: “You can get a regular, and very delightful, burrito at any number of authentic taquerias in the neighborhood for around $8 or $9.”)

While Atelier Crenn gets the press for its prix-fixe, Hashiri’s still the priciest menu in town: $500 for a “curated chef’s culinary journey through Kaiseki & Edomae Sushi” in a private room, prepared by your very own sushi chef. Saison — which for years offered the most expensive meal in town — is now in second place; here’s a deep dive into “$1,000 dinner for two”

Let us not forget the $4 cinnamon-butter toast extravaganzas at your choice of toast purveyors; our picks — if you’re going to do it, do it right — would be Trouble (pictured) or The Mill
