Redkey USB, recently fully funded on Kickstarter, is the world’s easiest data-erasing device, a tiny key that plugs into a laptop or desktop’s USB slot for immediate slate-cleaning … and presumably easier sleeping.
It bears reminding that when you dispose of or sell a computer, all your stored personal information (passwords, identity, PG-13 searching habits) can still be accessed by anyone savvy enough to mine it — and with an ever-growing number of data thieves out there looking to steal that information, a solution this simple is a real blessing.
How does it work, exactly? Turn off your computer. Plug it in. Turn on your computer. The key then “flushes” your PC of all its data in under three hours, allowing you to comfortably part ways with the computer, remove a virus, whatever. And bonus: Redkey can be used multiple times, as the software is built into the device.
It should be noted, for the record, that erasure is permanent. So tuck the key away in a drawer … perhaps one reachable only by a separate key.
