The Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris is ablaze.
Images captured from the scene of the fire show heavy smoke surrounding the landmark building, though the cause of the fire was not immediately clear. Officials reported it may be related to renovation work, according to the BBC.
Last year, the Catholic Church in France appealed for funds to renovate the crumbling Gothic cathedral, which has stood in Paris for 850 years.
The flames have destroyed part of the iconic building, causing the roof to cave in and the cathedral’s famous spire to fall.
Firefighters are currently tackling the fire, and the surrounding area in central Paris has been cleared to aid the effort. Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, reportedly called the blaze “a terrible fire,” and urged people to stay safe and respect the boundaries set up by fire crews.
We’ll update this story as more information becomes available.
