HBO’s The Last of Us has quickly become one of the most talked-about shows and fills our Sunday nights with dramatic excitement. If you’re not currently watching the zombie-pandemic-apocalypse series that was adapted from Neil Druckmann’s 2013 video game, then beware about reading on, as this article contains spoilers.
In episode three, we meet Bill, a survivalist who evades the authorities evacuating his town by hunkering down in his bunker until everyone is gone. A few years later, Frank comes along after getting caught in one of Bill’s traps, but Bill shows some mercy by opening his home for a shower and a home-cooked meal. What ensues is, of course, a very heartfelt journey of their relationship that ends in a dramatic — yet romantic — double suicide because Frank can’t go on living with his sickness, and Bill can’t go on living without Frank.
For the last meal they share together, Bill cooks the same dinner that he prepared for Frank when they met all those years ago — rabbit and vegetables with a bottle of 2002 Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Villages wine. If you’re not familiar with Beaujolais, it’s a French region that makes wines of the same name with gamay grapes. These juicy reds are known for being a little bit rustic and also quite affordable, and they’re pretty versatile when it comes to pairing with food.

Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Village is made with 100% gamay grapes that are grown in the southern part of the region. It’s fruit-forward but balanced with some spice and has notes of black cherries and strawberries, another fun nod to Bill and Frank’s garden in The Last of Us. Beaujolais is fairly light-bodied and low in tannins, so it’s a perfect match for everything from beef to poultry to, yes, roasted rabbit.
As bleak as The Last of Us is, episode three was a lovely reminder that good food and wine can really make a shitty situation a little bit better.
