In 1982, U.S. Marines were issued a watch officially known as the Mil-Spec W-46374B. Contrary to what you may believe when you hear the words “Marines” and “watch,” it wasn’t an indestructible machine that service members eventually passed on to their progeny. In fact, it was just a humble, disposable, temporary tool — the caseback was sealed so they couldn’t replace the batteries or make repairs.
Today, that watch is known as the Timex MK1. After making the original, the leaders in affordable watches relaunched the model in 2016, in keeping with the military-inspired trend in timepieces (and other gear). And while we’ve never been particularly taken with the reissues, we have to make an exception for the latest: a collaboration watch with British clothing label YMC (You Must Create).
It’s called, simply, the YMC x Timex MK1 and is available now, online at Mr Porter and in-person at Need Supply Co. and Glasswing stores. If you didn’t know the backstory, the quartz ticker may look like any ol’ Timex, but now that you do, there are some upgrades you should note.
First and foremost, it’s no longer disposable — this one’s going to stay in your collection for a good long while. Second, while the original was designed specifically for mass production, this is not only a limited edition, it’s both an understated and unique timepiece thanks to its “Burnt Rubber Brown” case that pairs with the utilitarian tan nylon strap. And for the final touch, the crystal is domed, which will make it immediately stand out from the traditionally flat-faced Timex offerings.
Like the original mil-spec model, this collaboration isn’t going to be an heirloom. But for those looking to expand their collection with an affordable watch you won’t see on other wrists? YMC’s MK1 is your pedigreed best friend.
