Wisconsin's Frank Lloyd Wright Trail Celebrates His 150th

Though his name is as synonymous with the Windy City as deep-dish, Old Style and Jeppson’s Malört, Frank Lloyd Wright wasn’t actually a Chicagoan by birth — he was a rival Cheesehead.

As such, the renowned architect’s home state is honoring his upcoming 150th birthday on June 8th with the Frank Lloyd Wright Trail, a nine-stop driving tour spread across southern Wisconsin.

Marked by 100 brown signs stationed along the highway, the self-guided tour starts on I-94 at the Wisconsin-Illinois state line and ends at a Wright-designed warehouse in Richland Center.

Spanning 200 miles, the trail includes stops at the Burnham American System Built Homes in Milwaukee; the Monona Terrace in Madison and Wright’s “autobiography in wood and stone,” the sprawling estate of Taliesin (which includes Wright’s summer home) in Spring Green.

Besides boosting tourism, the goal of the two-day tour is to let visitors take in the “landscape’s dramatic bluffs and coulees” that inspired Wright’s architecture aesthetic and made him famous.
