The Costume Institute Benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art — better known as the Met Gala — arrived in New York City with all the fanfare befitting of one of fashion’s most important annual events.
Drawing a who’s who of celebrities wearing a their equally impressive designers, this year’s event honors Rei Kawakuba, the founder and designer of Commes des Garçons.
Here’s a breakdown from Harper’s Bazaar of everything you need to know about the highly anticipated event as it happens.
Theme + Co-Chairs
Co-chaired by Vogue publisher Anna Wintour, Katy Perry and Pharrel Williams, this year’s theme is “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between,” which celebrates the work of the acclaimed designer. But it’s a particularly special occasion: Harper’s Bazaar notes that this marks only the second time that the Met has honored a living designer this way; the only other time being Yves Saint Laurent in 1983.
Guest List + How to Get In
As for the guest list? It’s flooded with A-list celebrities. Last year, Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Blake Lively took center stage on the red carpet. Those who really wanted to catch a glimpse of fashion’s elite in person, had to shell out $30,000 a ticket. Don’t expect to take any selfies while you’re there, though — last year’s controversial ban on the pics is remaining in place for 2017. Read the full breakdown from Harper’s Bazaar here.
