Yankees, White Sox to Play Real, Non-Ghost MLB Game at “Field of Dreams” Farm

The "home team" White Sox will welcome the Yankees to an auxiliary stadium in Iowa next August

It took 30 years, but Terrence Mann was right. People are coming, Ray.

Major League Baseball announced today that the Chicago White Sox will host the New York Yankees for a regular-season game next year, on August 13th, at the Field of Dreams baseball stadium.

The Commissioner’s Office can keep a secret, evidently, because this came out of nowhere. Twitter is already freaking out over a promo video of Aaron Judge acting out the “Is this heaven?” scene, and here’s some excellent content of stars on both teams emerging from cornstalks.

The logistics for the event are still a little murky, but it appears MLB plans to build an additional, temporary ballpark that can seat 8,000 people. This stadium will link to the outfield of the iconic movie site via a little cornstalk highway. Here’s a visual. The new park will be inspired by the now-demolished Comiskey Park, which was the home of the White Sox from 1910 to 1990, though it’ll include some hometown modifications: namely, windows in the outfield fence so everyone can have a good view of cornstalks at all times.

We have no clue at this point how much tickets are going to cost, but with so few seats, and at least two saved for Kevin Costner and Ray Liotta (if they don’t throw the first pitch to each other this entire exercise is an absolute failure), it’s going to be a tough game to get into. Dyserville, Iowa, is less than a four-hour drive from Chicago, so Sox fans will be there en masse. Iowans have also never seen a professional baseball game in their home state, and Yankees fans travel the best in the league.

Speaking of the Yankees — while the White Sox connection to Field of Dreams is obvious, the Bronx Bombers’ inclusion here is just smart. They helped MLB roll out a perfect weekend in London in June, and it’s likely they’ll put up double-digit run tallies when their new “short porch” is a farm.

Stay tuned for ticket details.
