It’s been months since he rode it, but a monster wave a Brazilian surfer rode off Portugal has finally been recognized as the biggest wave ever to be surfed.
At the World Surf League’s Big Wave Awards on Saturday, Rodrigo Koxa was recognized for riding the biggest wave ever surfed back in November.
Koxa rode the wave off Nazare, Portugal, on November 8, and WSL judges were able to determine it was 80 feet high after reviewing video and recognize that the Brazilian surfer now holds the Guinness World Record for the biggest wave surfed.
“I try to surf big waves all my life and I had a huge experience in 2014 where I almost died at Nazaré,” Koxa said in a statement. “Four months later, I had bad dreams, I didn’t travel, I got scared, and my wife helped me psychologically. Now, I’m just so happy and this is the best day of my life. Thank you to [World Surf League], it’s a dream come true.”
