When the 207 nations that are voting FIFA members meet on June 13 in Moscow to select the 2026 host of the World Cup, they’d better vote for the joint North American bid – or else.
At least that’s the way President Donald Trump made it seem with a tweet that hinted nations that don’t back the joint bid by the U.S., Canada and Mexico will lose American support.
“The U.S. has put together a STRONG bid w/ Canada & Mexico for the 2026 World Cup,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “It would be a shame if countries that we always support were to lobby against the U.S. bid. Why should we be supporting these countries when they don’t support us (including at the United Nations)?”
That perceived threat, as well as Trump’s previous comments criticizing African countries in general, could affect how FIFA Congress members view the North American joint bid.
Morocco also has a bid in to host the World Cup and, like the U.S., would need to secure a majority of the 207 voting FIFA members in order to host the popular soccer tournament.
