Picked by many to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl, the Jacksonville Jaguars have been the football equivalent of a dumpster fire.

Following two straight wins – including a victory over the Patriots – the Jags have dropped eight out of nine and are currently riding a seven-game losing streak.

Problems with the team boiled over on Monday as offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett was fired and starting quarterback Blake Bortles was benched by the Jaguars in favor of backup Cody Kessler.

With his team crumbling beneath him, Jaguars executive VP of football ops Tom Coughlin, who won two Super Bowls as the coach of the New York Giants, addressed the situation in an interview on 1010XL.

While speaking with the station, Coughlin said he still believes in a run-first offense and strong team defense, staples of his tenure in Jacksonville. He also said the team was “a whistle” away from making the Super Bowl last season.

“A whistle, we’re in the Super Bowl,” Coughlin said. “Let’s face it. Our numbers are down all over the place. Our sacks are down, our pressures are down, our turnovers are huge, our penalties — the way we behave on the field is ridiculous, our penalties.”

Coughlin also indicated sweeping changes will be coming in the offseason following an evaluation period.
