They’re all made of gold, silver, copper and zinc, but not all Olympic medals are created equal.

This week, the medals which will be awarded to the winners at the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics were unveiled by the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee.

After launching a donation campaign in 2017, the Organizing Committee was able to collect almost 80,000 tons of mobile phones and small electronic devices and strip them for materials to make the gold, silver and bronze medals for the Games.

Thanks to the donations, which included more than six-million mobile phones, every single one of the medals will be made from recycled e-waste.

After harvesting about 32 kilograms of gold, 3,500 kilograms of silver and 2,200 kilograms of copper and zinc from the donation campaign, approximately 5,000 of the medals will be produced for next summer’s games.

“The medals resemble rough stones that have been polished and which now shine, with ‘light’ and ‘brilliance’ their overall themes,” according to the Tokyo Organizing Committee. “The medals collect and reflect myriad patterns of light, symbolizing the energy of the athletes and those who support them; their design is intended to symbolize diversity and represent a world where people who compete in sports and work hard are honored.”

“I am convinced that Japanese metal molding techniques and the superb design have combined well, and that we have the best medal in the world — one that we can be proud of,” Ryohei Miyata, the chair of Tokyo 2020’s medal design selection panel, said in a statement. “There is also a beautiful balance between the design of the medals and their ribbons. It makes me want to strive for a medal myself.”
