From Hue Jackson to Marvin Lewis to Mike McCarthy, another of longtime NFL head coaches lost their jobs this season or on Black Monday after the season wrapped up.
All in all, eight head coaches were relieved of their duties by their employers meaning there is now an eight-pack of coaching vacancies in the NFL.
In no particular order, the teams that are now looking for a new head coach are the Bengals, Packers, Browns, Cardinals, Jets, Buccanneers, Dolphins, and Broncos.
While it’s possible a new job opens up – it’s always possible a playoff team could fire their coach after the postseason – there’s now an opportunity to examine how the vacancies stack up in comparison to one another.
At the top of the list in terms of being the most desirable vacancy, the Browns job tops the heap thanks to the presence of quarterback Baker Mayfield, a talented nucleus of young players, and plenty of room under the salary cap.
A close second, thanks to having all-time great Aaron Rodgers on the roster and under contract for years, is the opening with the Packers in Green Bay.
Similar to the Browns gig thanks to young QB Sam Darnold and lots of money to play with in free agency, the open job in New York with the Jets comes in third.
Surprisingly, thanks to low expectations, a bad division (the NFC North) and a roster that has some talent (Jamies Winston, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin), the Buccanneers’ opening is actually an attractive one and comes in fourth.
That’s followed by openings with the Bronco (No. 5), Cardinals (No. 6), and Dolphins (No. 7).
That means the worst open job in the NFL is in Cincinnati coaching players like Andy Dalton and A.J. Green for spending-averse owner Mike Brown.
