Money can’t buy you love … or a trip to the MLB playoffs.

Despite inking star outfielder Bryce Harper to a $330 million contract this offseason, the Philadelphia Phillies were eliminated from postseason contention after being swept by his former team, the Washington Nationals, during a doubleheader.

The Nationals beat the Phillies 4-1 in the afternoon and followed that up with a 6-5 victory during the night game at Nationals Park.

Speedy shortstop Trea Turner provided the key play of the night for the home team with a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning that game his team the lead.

“You just scream. I don’t even know what to do other than scream,” Turner said of his reaction after the blast. “We knew what was on the line.”

Washington needed a little help to secure their postseason berth, but when the Cubs endured their seventh straight loss, they were in. It is the team’s fifth playoff berth in eight seasons.

“I’ve got no hard feelings towards them at all. They’re a great team. They’re a great organization,” Harper said. “That’s why they’re at where they’re at right now.”

The win capped a miraculous turnaround for Washington, who started the season off with a 19-31 record and really seemed to be missing Harper. As it turns out, that actually wasn’t the case.

“They’re resilient. Perfect example: Tonight they were down, but they never feel like they’re out,” Washington manager Dave Martinez said after the win. “They stick together. And here we are, going to the postseason.”
