Following his team’s 75-65 loss to Duke at the Carrier Dome on Saturday night, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim opened up about what he is going through after killing a man in a car accident.
During the accident following his team’s victory over Louisville Wednesday night, Boeheim swerved to avoid a disabled car and hit 51-year-old Jorge Jimenez with his SUV.
The 74-year-old called 911 and has not been accused of any wrongdoing in the tragic accident.
“This is something that will be with me for the rest of my life,” Boeheim said. “Tuesday it’s not going to be better. It’s not going to be better next week. It’s not going to be better next month. It’s not going to be better next year. This is something that’s there forever for me.”
There was a moment of silence before the Syracuse/Duke game for the victim and Boeheim said he’s been in touch with the Jimenez family.
“I can’t describe the feelings I’ve had since Wednesday night,” he said. “I don’t think I can make anyone understand who hasn’t been there. I don’t. I’ve always felt in life, you get a lot of things you have to overcome. There’s nothing like this when a human life is lost and you are there. I can’t describe it to you.”
Unless new details about the case emerge, Boeheim is not expected to face any legal charges.
Boeheim has been the head coach at Syracuse for 43 years, led the program to five Final Fours, and won the national championship in 2003.
