It took seven games, but the Houston Astros were able to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers to win the 2017 World Series.
If the predictive analysis FiveThirtyEight has created bears out, the Astros will win the 2018 World Series once again.
Their anticipated victim? The Dodgers.
Using a system that takes into account head-to-head results, the margin of victory, quality of opponent, starting pitchers and travel distance and rest, FiveThirtyEight has rated the Astros as the best team in Major League Baseball to start the year, followed by the Indians, Dodgers, Yankees and Cubs.
All five teams have at least a 10% chance of winning the World Series, according to the analysis. The only other teams with above a 3% chance to win are the Red Sox and Nationals.
The ranking system – which is continually updated throughout the season – predicts the Marlins, Tigers, Padres, White Sox and Royals will be the worst teams this season. They all have a less-than-1-percent chance to win.
