On the last day of Washington’s final homestand during the 2018 season, the Nationals reportedly offered Bryce Harper a contract extension worth $300 million over 10 years.
The free agent outfielder declined the offer and opted for free agency.
An amazing amount to turn down – as it would be the biggest free-agent deal in terms of total money in the history of the four major sport – but also nearly $100 million short of what Harper and agent Scott Boras are seeking.
Also keep in mind, this is $100 million (or more) below where Scott Boras will likely set his initial asking price. Harper is one of the youngest and most decorated free agents he will ever represent. He was always going to shoot high. https://t.co/W6FeyAqbwE

Thought the offer was $100 million short, there were no hard feelings between Harper and the team.
Important on Harper: Both sides considered this a respectful offer. It wasn’t insulting. It was unprecedented.

However, his quick rejection of the deal doesn’t exactly inspire hope he’ll be returning to Washington.
Where Harper will end up – and if he’ll get the $400 million – remains to be seen, but the Yankees and Cubs are reportedly going to make a run at him.
