A little more than a month after he contracted COVID-19 after attending a White House event and neglecting to wear a mask, Notre Dame president Rev. John I. Jenkins criticized the school’s students for rushing the field on Saturday to celebrate the Fighting Irish knocking off the top-ranked Clemson Tigers 47-40 in double overtime.

The day after Notre Dame students stormed the football field following the win over No. 1 Clemson, Jenkins expressed disappointment in students not following coronavirus protocols after the upset victory.

“As exciting as last night’s victory against Clemson was, it was very disappointing to see evidence of widespread disregard of our health protocols at many gatherings over the weekend,” Jenkins wrote in a letter to students.

Unlike Jenkins at the White House, many of the students that stormed the did seem to be wearing masks. Still, the mass gathering does seem foolish considering active cases on Notre Dame’s campus have surged into the 200s after being reined in at 26 roughly four weeks ago, USA Today reports.

The attendance for the Clemson game in South Bend was 11,011 at a stadium that normally seats 80,795. Tickets are only sold to students, faculty, staff and families of players.

With the win on Saturday, Notre Dame moved up to No. 2 in The Associated Press college football poll, trailing only top-ranked Alabama. Thanks to the loss, Clemson gave up the top spot for the first time this season and landed at No. 4, trailing third-ranked Ohio State.
