If you are a fan of defense, this season in the NFL has been downright offensive.
Halfway through the NFL season, offenses in the league are on pace to set records for most points, touchdowns, and touchdown passes in a single season.
Through Week 9, teams have scored 6,440 points and 736 touchdowns with 473 of those scores coming via the pass.
Last season, average points per game scored by a team was a paltry 21.7. This year, that average is up more than two points to 24.
To get to that increased average, horrendous offenses like the Bills and Raiders have been offset by the 12 teams which are averaging at least 27.5 points per game including the Chiefs (36.3), Saints (34.9) and Rams (33.2).
There are a number of reasons for the increased offensive output, with the biggest one probably being an influx of talent on the field and on the sidelines.
Talented offensive-minded coaches like Sean McVay and Doug Pederson have been able to open up the playbook to get the most out of young quarterbacks like Jared Goff and Carson Wentz.
Nowhere is that more apparent than in Kansas City where Andy Reid has gotten first-year starter Patrick Mahomes to perform like an All-Pro veteran.
Mahomes has 29 TD passes and 3,185 yards passing yards, the most in both categories through the first 10 games of a player’s career.
