A historic soccer match in Argentina between longtime rivals Boca Juniors and River Plate was canceled following a vicious attack on the Juniors team bus as it headed to Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.
Images of the attack, which included hard projectiles and tear gas, surfaced on social media and appeared to show players being injured and/or becoming sick.

After the attack, when officials from the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) realized the Juniors weren’t in condition to play, the rescheduled second leg of the final of the Copa Libertadores was canceled again.

“Club Atletico Boca Juniors made a formal presentation to Conmebol on Sunday to request that the final of the Copa Libertadores be played in conditions of equality,” the injured club said in a statement.“After the acts of violence suffered in the vicinity of the stadium, having noted the magnitude and seriousness of them and the consequences they have generated in the establishment, Boca considers that these conditions are not met and requests the suspension of the match.”
Because of the pair of cancelations, it is unclear when the final match in the tournament’s 58-year history — the first-ever meeting of Boca and River Plate in the final — will be played.
“We don’t want there to be any excuses that conditions were not equal for both teams,” Alejandro Dominguez, CONMEBOL’s president, said on TV. “We want both teams to have time to recover.”
