Leicester City have been having an excellent start to their Premier League season, including a spot in the top reaches of the league. It might not be quite as dominant a season as their stunning 2015-16 campaign, in part owing to Liverpool’s performance in the league so far, but it’s been a reminder that this team’s hunt for glory is very much an ongoing affair.
That only continued on Friday, when Leicester City traveled to Southampton and emerged victorious. That they won wasn’t necessarily newsworthy, but the margin by which they did was: 9-0. We’re a long way away from “fast kicking, low scoring, and ties.”
How dominant was Leicester City’s performance in the game? Not one but two players on the team recorded hat tricks in the game: namely, Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy. The remaining goals were scored by Ben Chilwell, Youri Tielemans and James Maddison.
Making matters worse for Southampton: they played for most of the game with 10 men, as Ryan Bertrand was issued a red card early on.
Leicester City’s victory was a historic one: it was the largest margin of victory for an away win in the history of the Premier League — and was in fact the largest away win in a top division in the entire history of the Football League. (Some context: the Premier League in its current incarnation has only existed since 1992.)
The win also brought Leicester City up to second in the Premier League table — suggesting plenty of unexpected thrills to come as the season continues.
