Jimmy Garoppolo is now the highest-paid player in the NFL after the San Francisco 49ers offered him a five-year, $137.5 million deal, $74 million which is guaranteed. Garoppolo, 26, was in the final year of his rookie contract when he was traded by the New England Patriots in October to the 49ers for a second-round draft pick. Garoppolo spent some time on the sideline and then took over as a starter for the last five games of the year. He led the 49ers to a 5-0 record over the span with seven touchdowns and five interceptions. However, the highest-paid player in the league has had just seven career starts and 12 touchdowns over four years. This is a coup for Garoppolo and his agent, Don Yee.
When 49ers’ QB Jimmy Garoppolo’s 5-year deal gets finalized shortly, it will include the largest three-year cash total for a new contract in NFL history, just shy of $90 million, per source.

NFL’s highest paid player …
March ’16: Joe Flacco
June ’16: Andrew Luck
June ’17: Derek Carr
August ’17: Matthew Stafford
February ’18: Jimmy Garoppolo… One more time: The NFL’s highest paid player is usually the last good quarterback to get paid.

The $27.5 million per year average tops the $27 million average that Matthew Stafford received in a new contract extension from the Detroit Lions back in 2017, writes SB Nation. However, it is most likely that this average will be toppled by whatever contract free agent Kirk Cousins can nab, and the deal that Aaron Rodgers is expected to get from the Green Bay Packers.
The 49ers are clearly placing all their bets on their 26-year-old quarterback.
