Is Tom Brady Losing to Time? Experts Weigh In

With last year’s Facebook documentary series, Tom Brady made it very public that he is fighting a battle vs. time.

While he appeared to be winning last season when he captured the MVP and led the Patriots to the Super Bowl, time is getting its licks in this year as Brady has looked very pedestrian for much of 2018.

The Patriots sit at 9-4 – good for second in the AFC – and Brady has a quarterback rating of just 70.3 on the year, very mediocre by his standards.

So is Brady losing his grip?

To answer that, Bleacher Report turned to a panel of former pro football players and NFL experts to ask their opinion on the state of Brady’s play.

“The numbers are starting to show that there’s a deterioration coming,” former NFL quarterback Warren Moon told B/R. “Especially when you talk about the blitzing because that’s something he used to really excel at. You do start to lose some of your reflexes and responses. I started to figure that out later on in my career, too. Even though your mind knows where you should be going, sometimes your body just doesn’t react as fast. You’re starting to see some of that with him.”

Ex-Cardinals coach Bruce Arians also shared his thoughts. “There’s a little decline but not much,” he said. “When you look at the great quarterbacks, you’d never call any of them great athletes. When you think of Johnny Unitas and Marino and Manning and Brady and Joe Namath, they played in the pocket.”

According to three-time Super Bowl champ and former safety Darren Woodson, we won’t know the truth about Brady until the playoffs.

“The only way we’ll be able to tell [if Brady is still Brady] is if they’re on the road, in January, and let’s say they’re in Kansas City and they get into another firefight and they put it on Brady’s shoulders to win the football game,” Woodson said. “That’s when we’ll be able to tell if this is the same Tom Brady. … You’re going to have to be in a firefight in the AFC. Because you have top-of-the-line quarterbacks in Mahomes, Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger who are going to put up some points against that Patriots defense. So we’re going to find out a lot about Tom Brady. I want to see the Old Brady come out and have to hang 30 or 40 points on someone.”
