An Irish soccer team is calling its decision to falsely report one of its players had died in order to have an away game called off “a grave and unacceptable mistake.”

Prior to a match on the road against Arklow over the weekend, Ballybrack FC falsely reported player Fernando Nuno La Fuente had died.

Following the announcement, a death notice was posted in a local newspaper and teams across the Leinster Senior League in Ireland held a moment of silence to honor La Fuente.

Thinking La Fuente had been killed in a traffic accident, Arklow called off the match against Ballybrack. However, after people began digging into the story it was revealed La Fuente had gone to Spain four weeks ago and is alive and well.

“This grave and unacceptable mistake was completely out of character and was made by a person who has been experiencing severe personal difficulties unbeknownst to any other members of the club,” Ballybrack said in a statement on their Facebook page.

The person responsible for making the false announcement has been fired and the club has also apologized to La Fuente and his family.

The Leinster Senior League may impose sanctions against Ballybrack as a result of the incident.
