Former ESPN personality Jemele Hill will be taking her talents to The Atlantic.
The magazine’s editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, welcomed Hill to the magazine with a Monday tweet and said she will be covering “the intersection of sports, race, politics, gender, and culture.”
Hill, who had an “amicable” split from The Worldwide Leader in Sports after the two sides reached an agreement on a $5 million contract buyout, will be a “Roman candle” writer for the publication, Goldberg told The Hollywood Reporter.
Still being paid by ESPN, Hill can now write what she wants for The Atlantic without fear of repercussions or losing a paycheck. Especially since her public criticism of the Trump administration will be less of an issue for her new publication than it was for her previous employer.
“So much has happened in the last year that I felt like this is as an appropriate time as ever to spread my wings in different ways that I hadn’t really thought of before, or that I knew were possible,” she said. “I guess I was going through major FOMO—fear of missing out. There’s a wider playground that I can dabble in, and places where the discomfort is okay. I wasn’t going to be able to be happy with myself if I didn’t adhere to this calling that’s beckoning me right now.”
Beginning this month, Hill’s work will appear in both the magazine and TheAtlantic.com.
