It’s been a good year for Canadian sports. Earlier this year, the Toronto Raptors made an unexpected run to win the NBA Finals. Today, in Queens, Bianca Andreescu became the first Canadian tennis player to win a Grand Slam singles title.

Andreescu’s victory in the women’s final came in straight sets over Serena Williams, 6-3, 7-5.

The New York Times noted that Andreescu’s victory is the culmination of a fantastic run of play this year: “Andreescu is 8-0 against top 10 players this year and has not lost a completed match since March 1.”

Since returning to competition in 2018, Williams has made it to 4 Grand Slam singles finals, and has lost all of them. One more victory will tie Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

Williams expressed happiness at Andreescu’s success. “If anyone could win the tournament, outside of Venus, I’m happy it’s Bianca,” she said after the match.

Andreescu entered the U.S. Open ranked 15th in the world. The Times reports that on Monday, with this victory under her belt, she will move up to number 5.
