The Boston Typewriter Orchestra is both the coolest and nerdiest thing you’re likely to see anytime soon.

Made up of legit musicians and amateurs with good typing skills, the group makes music with an array of typewriters, from small, manual models to larger electronic versions. Using the sounds of the individual keys, rollers, and carriage returns, the Orchestra makes surprisingly percussive, interesting music from what most people would dismiss as outdated, utilitarian machinery.

“We get that we’re kinda weird and it’s a little bit of a wacky idea,” orchestra member Alex Holman told Great Big Story, “but we’ve discovered that this makes some legitimate music … we have true songs that come together and people seem to enjoy them.”

Scroll down to watch the Great Big Story video about them, as well as footage of a live performance.
