You Can Now Sleep In Giant Wine Barrels in Portugal

Your dreams are now barrel-aged

March 4, 2019 9:00 am EST

Forget about curling up with a glass of wine before bed.

One vineyard is taking that concept about nine steps further. You can currently book a wine barrel bedroom right in the center of the Quinta da Pacheca estate in Portugal. These aren’t regular used vino containers; they’re 270-square-foot replicas built from pine wood and designed by the property owners. Inside, they’re like regular hotel rooms — you’ll find walk-in showers, a large round bed and, bonus, skylight windows (yes, they have wifi, too).

Besides the novelty of the room, you’ll be waking up and experiencing first-hand a long-running and well loved vineyard. Quinta da Pacheca is located in the Douro region and dates back over 116 years. While you’re there, you can enjoy the 140-acre property’s on-site restaurant and tour the dozen-plus winemaking rooms (while getting a lot of free sips, natch).

The current booking rate is about $288 per night.

If you’ve caught the wine barrel room bug, lucky you: it’s now a trend, with vino stays available in Germany, the Netherlands and Chile. But given your eventual hangover, may we suggest an afternoon foray instead into a barrel-shaped sauna?
