For a hot minute, the Carolina Reaper was the world’s hottest pepper.
Then, thanks to a Welshman, the Dragon’s Breath replaced the Reaper atop the Scoville scale.
And now, there’s a new Scoville sheriff in town.
Engineered by Smokin’ Ed Currie, the breeder behind the Carolina Reaper, PuckerButt Pepper Company’s Pepper X allegedly packs 3.18 million Scoville Units. To put that in perspective, your regular Tabasco peppers clock in at 2,500 to 5,000 Scovilles.
A pepper product that’s been in development for a decade, Pepper X has been submitted to Guinness for the title of world’s hottest. “More than simple mouth burn, Pepper X singes your soul,” the developers say. “Starting with a pleasant burn in the mouth, the heat passes quickly, lulling you into a false confidence. All of a sudden your skin goes cold and your stomach goes hot, and you realize the power of X.”
You can’t actually get your mitts on the pure pepper at this point, which is good news for your fingers and other appendages, but it is available in a blended sauce called The Last Dab.
If you want some, you’ll wannt act fast — it’s a hot item.
