Care for a (sky) swim? The EcoWorld Ballymore’s Embassy Gardens development in London just debuted the Sky Pool, an 82-foot transparent swimming pool that stretches between the 10th stories of two skyscrapers.
As reported by CNN, this clear pool is suspended 115 feet in the air and is the largest freestanding acrylic pool structure in the world. It’s 10 feet deep and features nice views of the nearby U.S. Embassy and attractions like the London Eye and Westminster.
“Once you swim off, you can look right down. It will be like flying,” as Brian Eckersley, the Director of Eckersley O’Callaghan (the Sky Pool structural engineers), noted during the construction phase.
According to Ballymore, the pool’s developer, the creation and construction of the pool drew on “the expertise that has gone into creating some of the world’s major aquariums.” The structure was created in a purpose-built extension in Colorado, then transported by road to Texas and finally shipped out on a three-week journey by sea to Antwerp, and then to the Port of Tilbury in east London before arriving at Nine Elms. The structure was then put in place by a 750-tonne mobile crane (supported by a 50-tonne crane).
Sadly, the pool is only open to residents of the Embassy Gardens. There are 2,000 homes in the development, with prices starting at about $1.4 million for a two-bedroom.
