Remember the Strandbeest, the Dutch beach sculpture that, when given a shove, walked all by itself? This is the kitchen table version.
Wouter Scheublin of the Dutch design firm Scheublin and Lindeman created the blueprints for a “walking table” back in 2006, no doubt inspired by his countryman Theo Jansen’s “beach creature” project. The table functions in the standing position just like any normal table. But push it along, and the table starts walking with leg-like movements (it’s not fully autonomous like its Strandbeest cousin).
The Walking Table is available in a walnut edition of eight pieces. (For more information, click here.) Take a closer look below. Watch a video of the designer and his Walking Table in action at the bottom.
