Birkenstock — German makers behind the world’s foremost shoes for elementary school teachers and comfy hikers — just applied their ergonomic cork-and-latex technology to the other most important investment in your posture: beds. We didn’t see this coming, but it makes sense. The German brand released their new collection of beds and bases at the IMM Cologne furniture fair, and they look surprisingly sharp for a brand associated with health, sensibility and one of the world’s most ill-advised fashion choices.
Each item in their new sleep system is named after a city and suited to a different body type, with three levels of firmness and a range of shapes, all meant to accommodate varying body contours and sleep positions. With smart details like leather straps for holding your bedtime reading and long-lasting materials like sheep’s wool, leather and wood, Birkenstock is making its relevance to consumers plain. And before you ask, yes, their signature tread pattern crops up on at least one of the bed frames.
Sensible footwear and beds aren’t the normal man’s concept of sexy, but since health is wealth, a good night’s sleep would probably go a long way to keeping you looking (and feeling) your best. The collection is being released only in Europe for the time being, with details on global distribution soon to be announced.
We’ll certainly keep you posted.
